The Midwest Regional Black Family Reunion Celebration was inaugurated in 1988 in Cincinnati, Ohio, by Dorothy I. Height, President Emerita of the National Council of Negro Women. Since its founding, the event has grown into one of the region’s most impactful community-based traditions, rooted in celebrating the strength, resilience, and contributions of the Black family.
Today, the Black Family Reunion (BFR) returns August 13–16, 2026, in Downtown Cincinnati as a four-day, multi-generational celebration that welcomes attendees of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures. Thoughtfully curated programming spans community connection, workforce development, cultural arts, thought leadership, and family-focused enrichment—ensuring meaningful engagement across a wide range of interests and needs.
BFR has expanded to attract more than 15,000 attendees annually, supported by major local and national sponsors. Thanks to this continued investment, the event remains free and open to the public, reinforcing its commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
The mission of the Black Family Reunion is to unite the Greater Cincinnati community—including residents, corporations, and visitors—around the historic strengths and values of the Black family, while actively serving community needs and celebrating cultural contributions. Through dynamic programming, BFR showcases the arts, connects residents to local resources, and delivers experiences designed to improve the overall well-being of individuals and families throughout the region.
As a not-for-profit initiative, all sponsorship support directly sustains event operations, programming, and services—ensuring that BFR continues to serve as both a cultural cornerstone and a platform for community impact, economic opportunity, and civic engagement.
